Speed Generating vs Speed Control

A TOOL TO HELP YOU SURF BETTER

Using Ride Number is easy, you just have to understand the feelings of Speed Generating and Speed Control. On one end of the Ride Number scale is Speed Generating fins. These fins feel responsive and provide that extra spring most often wanted when the surf is lacking power. On the opposite side is Speed Control. These fins feel solid, engaged, and predictable providing that extra hold usually only needed when the surf is cranking. The middle ground is Balanced, offering a mix of the two extremes for an all around feel. Just remember, When you’re pumping – Speed Generating, when the waves are pumping – Speed Control

Speed Generating

SPRINGY, FLUID, RESPONSIVE

Help generate speed and make your board feel more lively.

Balanced

ALL AROUND

Allow for the original characteristics of your board to shine, without any directional influence.

Speed Control

SOLID, ENGAGED, PREDICTABLE

Help control speed and make your board feel more stable.

Feel = Flex + Rake + Foil

Speed Generating

vs

Speed Control

The Speed Generating, Speed Control, or Balanced feel that fins have based on the the weighted effects of flex, rake and foil.

Speed Control
PANCHO CONTROL SERIES
Soft Flex
EA BLACKSTIX = 7.2% FLEX

Soft Flex

vs

Stable Flex

More flexible fins will feel springy through turns and give them a Speed Generating feel, while stiffer fins will feel solid through turns giving them a Speed Control feel. This factor has the most weighting in determining Ride Number.

Stable Flex
EA CONTROL = 2.2% FLEX
Upright Rake
WCT TECHFLEX = 21.7% RAKE

Upright Rake

vs

Laid Back Rake

Upright fins feel pivoty, allowing for tighter turns and giving them a Speed Generating feel. Raked fins feel stable, providing hold through carves and giving them a Speed Control feel. Rake is a significant factor on determining the Ride Number.

Laid Back Rake
AM2 TECHFLEX = 25.5% RAKE
V2 Foil
F6 GENERATION = V2 FOIL

V2 Foil

vs

Flat Foil

V and V2 foils feel responsive and fluid through turns giving them a Speed Generating feel. Flat foils feel engaged and predictable through turns giving them a Speed Controlling feel. The effects of Foil on the overall Ride Number feeling are subtle but noticeable, therefore Foil has the least amount of weighting on the Ride Number.

Flat Foil
